Spencer Swalm is a recognized expert in health insurance, and owner of Redstone Benefits Systems, Inc., an employee benefits firm that works primarily with small business. His legislative efforts to promote affordable health insurance have been recognized by the Colorado affiliate of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
He is a Colorado native and comes from a family with a proud tradition of public service and conservative political activism. His father, Paul Swalm, served with distinction in the Colorado House of Representatives and on the Denver City Council.
He attended Colorado College before transferring to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he graduated with a B.A. in history. He holds a law degree from the University of Denver, and practiced for ten years specializing in estate planning.
Mr. Swalm has a long history of conservative, free market-oriented political activism. As early as 1982, he began writing and speaking, calling for an end to RTD tax subsidies and PUC reform to enable free market transportation solutions. His articles caught the attention of John Andrews, founder of The Independence Institute, the nation's first state-focused, conservative/market oriented think tank. Spencer wrote some of the Institute's earliest position papers and was named a senior fellow.
He has been a frequent contributor of op-ed pieces to Denver dailies and a featured guest on radio news/talk programs. He served on the board of the Colorado Council on Economic Education.
Spencer and his family attend Grace Chapel in Centennial where he teaches in the children's Sunday School. In his service on the missions committee he has traveled twice to the upper reaches of the Amazon Basin, assisting missionaries working with a Bolivian tribal group.
He is married to Marleen Swalm, a registered nurse at Saint Joseph Hospital. They have three children in (or graduated from) Cherry Creek Schools.
